In
this episode of CodeCast, co-hosts Gary Short and Markus Egger discuss
technical debt. Technical dept is like financial dept, but instead of borrowing
money you're borrowing time. Taking a shortcut in an architectural or software
decision to save time when at a future date you need to come back and fix or enhance
that shortcut. The more shortcuts you take postponing required coding, the more
technical dept you build up. The discussion includes the benefits, sacrifices,
trade-offs, costs, and other issues around actions and decisions that revolve
around technical dept.

In this episode of CodeCast, Ken Levy discusses the topic of Code Camp events with Chris Kinsman and Walt Ritscher. While the discussion is about organizing and attending Code Camp events in general, the upcoming Seattle Code Camp is discussed as an example event. Code Camp is a type of community event where developers talk with-and learn from-fellow developers, free, and anyone is welcome to attend and speak. An original Code Camp organizer, Thom Robbins, wrote a six-point manifesto: Code Camps are (1) by and for the developer community; (2) always free; (3) community developed material; (4) no fluff - only code; (5) community ownership; and (6) never occur during working hours. In this episode of CodeCast, Ken Levy interviews Claudio Lassala, lead developer at EPS Software, and primary host of the free weekly Virtual Brown Bag meetings online via Live Meeting. The idea of a brown bag meeting is simple: once a week, people bring their “brown bag lunch” to the conference room, and we share tips and tricks. In order to cater for that online, we’re starting a “virtual” brown bag meeting. The meetings are hosted by the Virtual ALT.NET website through LiveMeeting (one of the most important aspects of ALT.NET is “continuous improvement”. The weekly schedule is every Thursday at 12:00pm noon CT (1pmET/10amPT). Claudio discusses the history, recent activity, participation information, benefits, and future plans for the Virtual Brown Bag (VBB) meetings.

In this episode of CodeCast, Ken Levy interviews Chris Koenig, a developer evangelist for Microsoft in the Dallas, Texas offices. This is an in-depth discussion about the history, status, and roadmap for GiveCamp events in various cities. GiveCamp was an idea hatched by Chris a few years ago, and now there are many GiveCamp events organized around the country with expansion plans this year. GiveCamp is a weekend long event where software developers, designers, and database administrators donate their time to create custom software for non-profit organizations. Some events focus on a specific technology like Microsoft .NET using Visual Studio or Expression Web. But using other technologies is often a possibility such as using Graffiti, Sitefinity, DotNetNuke, Wordpress, Joomla, mojoPortal, Drupal, etc. The custom software created at GiveCamp could be a new website, a small data-collection application to keep track of members, Facebook page, a rich client or even a mobile application..This episode of CodeCast is educational for any developers or organizers considering volunteering to participate in and benefit from an upcoming GiveCamp event.

There is no exit music from a community band in this episode but we will include more in random future episodes as it becomes available to us. We are working on improvements to the audio recordings both in studio and with interviews. These interviews were all recording at PDC, and we have improved our recording techniques since then for interviews. We will try to keep each show at around 30 minutes each like this one. episode 7 we should be out of what we might consider CodeCast beta mode. J
