In this episode of CodeCast, Ken Levy interviews Nathan Halstead of Microsoft, program manager on the Visual Studio Platform team responsible for the Visual Studio Shell (Isolated and Integrated) Shell products, as well as the Visual Studio SDK. Discussed in-depth is an overview of the isolated and integrated shells for both VS 2008 and the new VS 2010, scenarios for using one or both shell products, Microsoft partners and others using the free shell runtime. Nathan also covers what’s new in the VS SDK for developing for the VS 2010 Shell runtimes, and how the VS SDK is used to create VS packages, MEF components, and VSIX projects for use with the VS 2010 Shell products.

In this episode of CodeCast, Ken Levy interviews Weston Hutchins, program manager on the Visual Studio Shell team (team responsible for the core IDE services and extensibility architecture as well as the overall look and feel of Visual Studio). Weston has worked extensively with the Ecosystem team during the Visual Studio 2010 product cycle to design the New Project Dialog and the Extension Manager. In this episode, Weston gives a tour of the new IDE shell features of Visual Studio 2010 including the various components that are new, enhanced, WPF based, etc., as well as some cool tips as preparation for upgrading from VS 2008 to VS 2010.

In this episode of CodeCast, KenLevy interviews Chris Granger, program manager on the VS platform team at Microsoft, working on the new VS IDE editor (WPF based). Chris goes in-depth on the new VS 2010 editor including many of the cool features native to the editor as well as under-the-hood extensions architecture using the Visual Studio SDK. With the new managed editor API extensions and WPF/XAML based UI, a new generation of source code editing capabilities will evolve with VS 2010.
