I'm a beginner at using crystal reports. I found this article enlightening, chock full of usefull suggestions and lucid. Well done!

Nice try. I guess if you are new to Crystal this may be of some help, but if I were to give advice to a new user I would say look elsewhere.

I don't understand why anyone would create an interface like this to present data, when the Crystal Reports handles these functions within it's own controls to begin with. Why would you build a form with Preview, Print and export to PDF when you can just load the report and in the Crystal Report Viewer and use the prebuilt functions for printing and exporting? This makes absolutely no sense to me at all. As a Crystal Reports developer for over 12 years I find this article to be steering the readers in the wrong direction.

I really enjoyed reading this article. Kevin's writing style is clear and concise.
Although this article might be geared mostly towards users new to Crystal and .NET, I think users with more experience in Crystal and .NET also will find it interesting.
I especially liked the way Kevin handles the printer options issue without previewing the report, this is not an uncommon request from users. Also thank you, Kevin, for
making the code available for download.
Looking forward to your next article.

Good description of Crystal basics. A bit lean on the meat though. I'd like to have seen more about merge module deployment and it's need for a registration key, deployment licensing concerns for the Web, exporting options for Excel to avoid blank and merged columns, and passing report parameters at runtime. The demo code isn't easily available from the article or the author's website, though the author responds to email quickly. The demo code worked eventually. It was a 2003 project that included some 2005-specific code, and an Export to Excel bug. It did highlight the ease of abstracting the viewer into a universal class, and the ease of exporting to a file. Overall, the article is average: it gives average users a good foundation to begin experimenting, but it loses users already familiar with Crystal.
